Furnace Repair
What to Do Before Scheduling an Appointment
Before you make a phone call to us, there are a few things you can try:
- Change the filter if needed. When is the last time you changed the air filter? Is the filter caked with dust and dirt?
- Make sure the thermostat is set to heat.
- Check the batteries on the thermostat.
- Try increasing the temperature on the thermostat 5 degrees to see if the equipment will turn on.
- Check the circuit breaker to make sure it was not tripped. If the breaker is tripped, you can reset it by shutting it off and then turning it back on. If it trips again, then you may need to call a technician to prevent further damage.
- Check the "furnace switch." This can be located on the furnace or on the wall near the furnace. It looks like a regular light switch and can often be switched off accidentally.
- Check for air flow. Is there air coming out of the floor or ceiling registers? Look at the condenser (located outside) to make sure it is clean and has room to breathe. Quite often plants, weeds, and grass grow to close to the condenser, preventing proper air flow.
- Check for outdoor weather conditions. Do you see ice on the lines connecting the indoor and outdoor units? Is there water around the furnace? Is there ice on the copper lines going outside? If yes, then shut the outside unit off for a couple of hours but keep the blower on so the furnace will continue to run. This will allow the ice to melt. Try the unit again in two hours. If the problem returns please schedule a repair visit with a licensed technician.
